Core Academy of Science

Core Academy of Science is a nonprofit organization that provides online educational experiences for learners of all ages. We currently offer homeschool science courses for high school students. The courses feature video lessons designed by and starring actual scientists. Each course is compatible with multiple textbooks and is supervised by a teacher. Courses include video lessons, written notes, homework assignments, quizzes, and tests. Each student will receive a point summary at the end of the course, but parents retain control of the final grade assignment. Since we are not a school, there are no registration requirements. Just purchase the course you want, and we’ll sign you up!

HEArts (Homeschool Enrichment in the Arts) provides quality hands-on instruction for grades K-12. The mission of HEArts is to offer quality instruction in subjects challenging to teach at home with competent, professional teachers in a Christ-centered environment, thereby affirming parents in their God-given roles and responsibilities. Past curriculum has included (but is not limited to): piano/keyboard, guitar, chorus, band, orchestra, bells, art, art history, photography, science/experiments, history, creative writing, Spanish, and gym classes.

English

Reading and Comprehension, Writing and Composition, Grammar

v Multicultural Literature

Reading books from authors of color

Writing assignments include building a character of another culture and writing about their life.

v English Literature

This is a study of American and English poetry and short stories. Students will learn to critique and compose writing.

v Building a Sentence with Style

Grammar class will be focused on learning the parts of a sentence and how to properly compose sentences. Writing will be edited and deconstructed in order to strengthen grammar skills. Students will learn how to use Style books like the AP Style Book.

v Scrabble Spelling Bee

Using the game Scrabble, students will work on their spelling and vocabulary. They also will practice their math by learning how to keep score. This class is about words, words and more words.

v The Perfect Essay

Students will learn to write and craft essays. They will learn about the different types of essays like persuasive writing, contrasting and comparing and book report essays.

v Learn to Read and Write

First steps to reading and writing.

Math

v Beginning to Learn Math – First steps to learning math includes adding, subtracting, fractions, telling time and counting money

v I See Three Dimensions – Learning to see and draw shapes in three dimensions. Students will learn equations associated with the shapes and dimensions.

v How did that happen? – Applying physics theories to real life situations. Students will experiment by trying to recreate a scenario so they can see a physics equation in action.

Journalism

v News 101 – Writing in the inverse pyramid style of journalism. Students will learn about the editorial writing style. They will learn how to take notes, how to ask questions to sources and the importance of editing.

Science

v Botany, FlowerBots – Study of native plants, including flowers and trees or Georgia. Field trips to Fernbank Science Center and Stone Mountain Park. Students will be drawing, painting and drying plants.

v Ornithology, Look, it’s a Bird! – Studying, identifying native birds to Georgia. Field trip includes trip to Fernbank Science Center and Stone Mountain Park. Students will be drawing and painting.

v Astronomy, Stellar Skies – Studying the universe using tools like Google Sky. Students will learn constellations and definitions of various stellar bodies like the moon, nebulas and comets. Student field trip is to the Fernbank Planetarium.

v My Own Science Fair – Students will create projects using the scientific method. They will decide with their teacher on a topic and while the project is underway, the student will be evaluating the changes of their project from beginning to end.

v Biology – Study of human, animal and plant biology. Students will study what makes up a cell and what physical traits make something alive. The depth and complexity of this course varies with age.

v Pump up the Volume – A study of scientific measurements for liquids, solids and gases.

v Ingenious Engineering – Students will engineer their own creations like building bridges, roller coasters and planes. The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the many branches of engineering and how their own inventions may be genius one day.

v Mellow Mars – Students will learn and research current news on the Mars rovers and recent discoveries about the planet. This class is about research, composition and presentation.

Visual Arts

v Faces and Places– Students will paint landscapes, draw faces and possibly bodies.

v Jewelry by Me – Beading. Using bought and found materials, students will make jewelry.

v Clay Play – Using clay, students will make plaques, bowls, cups and raised relief sculptures.

v Watercolor – Students will learn to make their own watercolors from acrylic paints. They will learn about and use the various papers that are best to use. They will practice painting still life

v Olay! Oil-ay! – Students will learn how to paint using oil paints. They will learn what surfaces can take oil, how to mix colors, how to stretch oil, creating textures, and cleaning brushes after using oil.

v Mix it up – Mixed Media Collage. Teaching students to be bold and original with their technique my mixing up what they have learned with found objects.

Class Information:

· 8-9 students/class

$8/lesson, $5 for siblings

32 lessons/year, September – May (break between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day)

· Two classes on Thursdays:

12:45 – 2:15 p.m.

3:15 – 4:45 p.m.

Personal Information:

· Bachelor of Science with major in biology, minor in chemistry

· Twelve years teaching science to special education students in Gwinnett County elementary school (as paraprofessional)

· Eight years teaching homeschool science to elementary students

· Five years co-leading Summer Science Camp – two weeks in June

Class Philosophy:

I teach from a Christian perspective. I believe in creation and a literal Genesis. Creation science and evolution are both theories, and one’s worldview determines which theory one believes. I believe in creation science, and I point out the inconsistencies of evolution with Biblical teaching.

This is a two-year introductory program that includes most of the AKS/CRCT standards for the public schools, grades 3-6. (In two years, we can’t cover everything.) In conjunction with a lesson, there are always hands-on activities, such as experiments with data-keeping, games, puzzles, graphs, and demonstrations. Children learn by active participation; they also have information to share. Our classes are lively and fun. Students will learn to use the scientific method, a binocular microscope, balance scales, and other science equipment.

I do not give tests or grades and only occasional homework to finish class work or carry out an experiment. My objective is that children learn that science is fun and exciting and to be prepared for more formal learning in higher grades.

The Museum of Arts and Sciences

The Museum of Arts & Sciences (MOAS) is the primary art, history and science museum in Central Florida. Located on a 90-acre Florida nature preserve, the 100,000 square foot facility is host to over 30,000 objects including the finest collection of American Art in the southeast, the largest collection of Cuban art outside of Cuba, a significant Chinese art collection, and Florida’s prehistoric Giant Ground Sloth. Also on display, is Coca-Cola entrepreneur Chapman Root’s lifetime collection of Americana, including two private rail cars. The museum’s theater, planetarium, and children’s center make for a truly interactive experience.

The Charles and Linda Williams Children’s Museum opened November 21, 2008 and is the only hands-on science center in Volusia County. The 9,000 square foot addition to the Museum of Arts & Sciences houses cutting-edge, interactive science exhibits for children ages 4 to 14.

Greetings! My family and I have come to deeply appreciate Usborne books (and more) and the astonishing fact that there are always new books to spark our interests. We sometimes call ourselves book junkies. I (Jody) did not grow up enjoying books and reading so I am eager to help kids love books from baby-hood, to young adult. In a way, I am making up for lost time. I see how my disregard for sitting down to read a good book, has impacted me through the years. I struggled in school and believe if I had developed a zeal for opening up a book and [completely] reading it, some of my struggles may have been avoided. These are amazing books and my family loves them… enjoys reading them, thrilled with the insightful illustrations, and we remember the information.
